The Mesha Stele, also known as the Moabite Stone, was found in 1868. (A stele is a stone or monument with an inscription.) It dates to about 840 BC and contains a significant Canaanite inscription in the name of King Mesha of Moab. Mesha tells how Chemosh, the god of Moab, had been angry with his people and had allowed them to be subjugated to the Kingdom of Israel, but at length, Chemosh returned and assisted Mesha to throw off the yoke of Israel and restore the lands of Moab.
We don't know if the inscription is intended to describe the events of II Kings 3 or some other event, but at least it parallels our passage. This week, we'll continue at verse 21 and cover the gory details of how the Moabites tried to get Chemosh to come to their aid. Did he? Or is something else happening and Moabites have put their own spin on it.
Come and discuss these things in this week's episode of Men of Valor. We meet each Saturday at the church, from 8:00-9:30 AM and enjoy some donuts, pastries, or other light breakfast-type food. I hope you can make it!
